Hamanasu, a shrub belonging to the Rosaceae genus Rose, is native to East Asia, particularly Japan, and has thrived along the beaches of northern Japan for centuries. Cultivated in Hokkaido before the war for its essential oils, Hamanasu Rose is renowned for its richness in tannins, notably Vitamin C. These tannins aid in collagen synthesis, helping to prevent age spots and sagging skin while promoting a luminous complexion. Originally named Hamanashi due to its pear-like fruits, Hamanasu has acquired its current name due to the influence of the Tohoku dialect. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (17 February 1796 – 18 October 1866), a German doctor at Dejima in Nagasaki during the Edo period, brought it back to the Netherlands. He returned to Japan, and Hamanasu was introduced to Europe. After that, it seems that various varieties were born by being mixed with other roses. Hamanasu is also called "Japanese rose" in English, and its essential oil is full of the high-quality scent of a rose as it is named.
